Eleven children under the age of 10 have drowned in and around Johannesburg since the beginning of December.

This month rescue service Netcare 911 has attended to 15 cases of drownings in swimming pools, rivers, dams and even fish ponds.

This weekend a man drowned in a community swimming pool in Grootvlei on the East Rand on Saturday and the body of a teenage boy was found floating in Florida Lake on the West Rand yesterday afternoon.

This has led to emergency services issuing a warning to the public to be on the alert with children.

Neil Dollman of Netcare 911 said: "Adults should watch their children closely when they are swimming, especially where it is not easy to notice that the child has disappeared into the water." - Dudu Busani
