A young couple died instantly after they were struck by lightning in Klaarwater outside Durban on Saturday.

Mzwandile Gcobo, 23, and his girlfriend, Anita Dlamini, 17, were left sprawled in the middle of the road.

Witnesses who were travelling by bus and rushed to help the couple found that they had severe burns on their legs and arms.

Ngcobo and Dlamini were certified dead by paramedics who found them still holding hands when they arrived at the scene.

Robert Zwezwe, who shared a house with Ngcobo, said the couple were like puppies and did everything together.

"I have been staying with Ngcobo for a while. I treated him like my son and Dlamini my daughter," said Zwezwe.

He said before the thunderstorm the couple had removed their clothes from the washing line.

"I watched them with the clothes in their hands and they were still holding hands."
