Runs flowed freely in the nine matches played on the day with three centuries and eight half-centuries scored - a feat that has not been achieved on the first day before.
The top scorer of the day came from the Free State. Riley Rossouw smashed an undefeated 182 off just 115 balls, including 18 fours and 10 sixes. Free State wicket-keeper batsmen Lotlotlo Sesele made 125 off 131 balls (17 fours and one six).
Pieter Malan of Northerns, was the other player to get a ton. His 131 against KwaZulu-Natal Inland included eight boundaries. The half-centuries came from Gauteng's Peter Platt (70 v KwaZulu-Natal); Jonathan Vandiar and Keshav Maharaj, who got 93 and 78 not out for KwaZulu-Natal in the same game, Eastern Province's Wayne Parnell (70 not out v Easterns) and Calvin van Rensburg of Northwest, who made 94 against SWD.
Parnell was one of four bowlers to get four wickets on the day. He took 4-26 against Easterns.
Other bowlers to shine were Northwest's Johan Grobler (4-10 v SWD), Alrid Hawken (4-38 for Limpopo against Mpumalanga) and Mpumalanga's Ampie Korf (4-14 v Limpopo). - Sapa
