Free State Stars did not only go into the Christmas break this term with a sound win, they also managed to keep intact their unbeaten home run in professional matches.

They walloped pretenders to the title Winnerspark 3-1 in Bethlehem on Saturday.

Stars, owned by tycoon Mike Mokoena, are the bookies' favourites to secure promotion to the Mvela Golden League (MGL) league next season.

The past weekend marked the end of the first round of the MGL programme.

The league's teams will now proceed with the Absa Cup's preliminary matches, starting tomorrow.

Stars will visit Pretoria University at LC De Villiers Stadium on Wednesday at 3pm.

Winnerspark engage the not-so-sparkling Durban Stars at Chatsworth Stadium in Durban at 7pm tomorrow.

Durban Stars are expected to go for broke against Winnerspark to regain some pride after their 0-1 setback at Odi against strugglers GaRankuwa United, played on Saturday.

University of Pretoria, also known as AmaTuks, suffered a 0-1 defeat at the hands of Julius Dube's Nathi Lions in KwaMashu - also on Saturday.

Bay United, who have not been doing well this season, drew 1-all against Findetia Rangers at Wolfsons Stadium.

lPremier Soccer League general manager Andrew "Druza" Dipela said it was encouraging that all the league's teams would enter the festive break having played the same number of matches.
