The examination papers of pupils at two high schools are being remarked.
Pupils in grades 7 to 9 at Kgononyane and Huhudi high schools, in Ganyesa, near Vryburg in North West, failed miserably in their end-of-year exams.
Only one pupil at Kgononyane and two at Huhudi passed the exams.
A delegation made up of officials from the Education Department, local residents and the local chief met to determine the cause of the abysmal results at the schools.
Teachers and officials from the regional office of the Education Department have been suspended.
It was decided that all exam papers written by pupils in grades 7 to 11 would be remarked.
An Education Department spokesman, Charles Raseala, said the remarking was under way and would probably be finished by today.
"The only problem we now face is that most of the pupils are away on holiday.
"But when they come back on January 10 they will know where they stand," he said.
Raseala would not disclose the names of the four teachers and three senior managers from the regional office of the Education Department who have been suspended.
Education MEC Johannes Tselapedi said: "We had faith in these people, but it is clear that they have failed us."
North West Premier Edna Molewa yesterday said measures would be taken to improve the performance of the two schools and others that were failing to deliver.
