A 58-year-old woman, Thokozile Fakude, of Hambanathi in Tongaat, north of Durban, has given up hope of finding her metro policeman son who went missing in January last year.

Phiwe Fakude, 31, disappeared a few days after reportedly being threatened by a taxi owner whom he had ticketed.

His service revolver was found in the sea nine days after he disappeared. His mother heard the news on the radio.

Thokozile Fakude said yesterday that she no longer entertained thoughts of finding her only son alive - but she hoped that one day she would be able to bury his remains.

"I would be lying if I said I still have hopes of finding him. It's been too long. This coming January we would be commemorating two years of his disappearance," she said.

Fakude said that before her son's disappearance he had quarrelled with a taxi owner.

"This taxi owner came to my house and threatened my son in front of me."
