Fifteen days after the launch of the Arrive Alive campaign, 44 unroadworthy buses have been impounded countrywide.
The seizure of the vehicles forms part of the Transport Department's plan to reduce the carnage on the roads, especially over the holiday season.
Departmental spokesman Collen Msibi said buses were checked for defective brakes, steering, tyres, oil systems, lights, indicators and wipers.
