The KwaMdakane Soccer Cup, a popular festive season tournament, kicks off at KwaMdakane in Newcastle tomorrow.

Organiser Richard Kaempf of Thuthuka Foundation said: "This has proved to be one of the most supported festive season tournaments in KwaZulu-Natal.

"It has been growing in leaps and bounds since we started it. The most exciting thing is that it gets the whole community involved."

Local legend Helman Mkhalele and the Sports Trust will present 16 soccer kits and sneakers worth R150 000 to clubs in the community.

Zola Dunywa, former Bafana Bafana manager and South African Football Association development director, will be one of the speakers.

"The two-week-long tournament will end with impressive players taken to the High Performance Centre in Pretoria for scientific tests," said Kaempf.

Mkhalele, a businessman who is still registered as a player by Jomo Cosmos, is one of the many soccer products of Newcastle. Others include Fani Madida and the late Sizwe Motaung.
