The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee has conveyed its condolences to the family of netball star Yvonne Phiri, who died in a car accident near Hartbeespoort Dam on Saturday night.

"Yvonne has proved to be a national asset and a world-class sports star," said Moss Mashishi, president of Sascoc. "She has served the under-21 national team during the 2003 Cosana Games, Zone 6 Games, an event in the United States, and was in the South African team that toured Fiji and New Zealand in July.

"Yvonne was an astute athlete who was destined for greater heights, this above all her achievements at such a tender age.

"The major challenge ahead of us is to provide young people with an avenue to adopt healthy lifestyles, where physical fitness can contribute to mental alertness." - Sowetan
