More than 300 people yesterday walked from Polokwane to Botlokwa in Limpopo, a distance of about 60km, as part of the bid by the provincial management of the SABC to raise awareness about the abuse of women and children.
The money raised during the event will be donated to charities, Thobela FM station manager Leuba Ramakgolo said.
The walk to Botlokwa started at 5am at the SABC building in Polokwane and the first group of walkers arrived at the new Botlokwa shopping mall soon after midday.
Several provincial government and church officials joined Ramakgolo and other senior members of the SABC staff on the walk.
Ramakgolo said most of the walkers had been enthusiastic on the journey and had indicated that they believed more such campaigns should be held.
"We need to highlight the plight that many women and children experience daily," Ramakgolo said.
"There are still women and children who do not speak out about the abuse they experience," he said.
"We need to encourage such people to come out into the open and speak about the problem."
According to Ramakgolo, society was sick and tired of all forms of abuse.
"We all have a responsibility to end the scourge.
"We must join hands and fight it," he said.
