The Northern Cape leader of the Independent Democrats (ID) plans to sue the Department of Justice after he was acquitted of rape.

John Gunda, 47, was acquitted in the Kimberley high court on Friday after he was sentenced to 10 years by the Upington regional court earlier this year.

In a telephonic interview yesterday, Gunda said: "My friend's Venture was broken, so I helped him to ferry some of his passengers to work. After three weeks this woman made wild accusations that I had raped her."

Gunda, a father of three, said he is going to sue the Department of Justice, Minister of Justice Brigitte Mabandla and the magistrate who sentenced him. He said the magistrate had all the facts before her in the case that had dragged on for more than two years.

In response to his acquittal Gunda said he has been vindicated.

"All my life I have had the utmost respect for women and I have been happily married to my wife for the past 22 years."
