A severe panga attack on a woman by her jealous former boyfriend at the weekend coincided with the end of the 16 Days of Activism campaign.
Sylvia Paku, 28, of Mpumalanga, had her ear and lower arm almost chopped off by her enraged former lover in GaBereta village near Bushbuckridge.
Paku, who is from the nearby Hlamalani village, said that her former boyfriend called her on Saturday and pretended he just wanted to speak to her.
She said that she was determined to tell him once and for all that she would never be able to love him again because she was back in love with the father of her two small children.
"I was visiting a friend in GaBereta village when a young boy arrived to tell me that my former lover was calling me at the gate.
"I went to him and he begged me to love him back, but I told him it was no longer possible because I was back in love with the father of my kids," Paku said.
The man, whose name is known to Sowetan, allegedly got so angry that he pulled out a panga and started chopping at Paku's body.
Paku's left ear and arm were nearly chopped off and she suffered severe injuries to her head, shoulders and back.
"I am lucky to be alive because that beast was actually killing me. Everything suddenly went dark, but I faintly heard him riding away on his skorokoro scooter," Paku said.
Paku's sister, Busi, who stays in GaBereta, said that when she saw her sister with the man she immediately knew the worst was coming.
She rushed to the scene and found her sister lying on the ground in a pool of blood and shouted for help.
Paku received several stitches in hospital and was discharged two days later.
Her ear, hanging by a piece of skin, was reattached in hospital.
The alleged attacker was arrested on Monday and is expected to appear in the Mapulaneng magistrates' court today.
