Education needs holistic approach

The story of Kgononyane Secondary School outside Vryburg in North West is a pathetic one.

The story of Kgononyane Secondary School outside Vryburg in North West is a pathetic one.

As reported in this newspaper yesterday, only one child from an entire student body of 659 have passed year-end exams.

Actually the school's saga is depressing. Teachers seldom pitch up for classes and there is no feeding scheme for the school's pupils who attend classes hungry. There is grinding poverty in the village where the school is situated. Unemployment figures are shocking.

Southey village does not only have an education crisis but also faces serious socio-economic problems that can only be redressed by a sustainable development programme.

North West's government has to act swiftly and attend to the plight of these destitute families.

The establishment of a task team last Friday to look into the school's problems is a step in the right direction, though swift, corrective action is needed before schools reopen next year.

The task team must widen its scope and include officials from the department of social welfare and development to deal with poverty-alleviation issues.

Finally state intervention is imperative to help a community that has seemingly been bypassed for development mainly because it lives in the backwoods of the country.
