I am 26- and I live in a beautiful townhouse in what I thought is a secure complex.

Two weeks ago I was woken at 3.25am by the sound of breaking glass. When I ran to the lounge to check, I was confronted by two robbers. I ran back to my bedroom and locked myself in. I started screaming and within minutes lights were on everywhere and neighbours were hammering on the door. The robbers took off.

I was terrified and was not able to go back to sleep, so my boyfriend came to stay with me. Since then I cannot stay alone. My boyfriend sleeps over every night, and if he can't, my sister comes to stay. I have put in extra security, but I am still living in fear. My colleagues suggested that I see a counsellor. What do you think?

I have to agree. You must immediately seek help from a trauma counsellor to help you come to terms with what happened, and to help you learn to live in peace again. You have had a very unpleasant experience and your reaction is normal. If you don't seek help, this unsettled state will continue and will effect every aspect of your life. Speak to your doctor or local medical centre to get the names of trauma counsellors and experts who specialise in this field.
