Two Mpumalanga jails spring 17 leaks

Just days after the recapture of Pretoria C-Max's "Houdini", Annanias Mathe, 17 prisoners are on the run after breaking out of jail in Mpumalanga.

The awaiting-trial prisoners escaped from two separate police stations at almost the same time on Wednesday morning.

Though not quite as dramatic as Mathe's break-out the escape from the KwaMhlanga and Dennilton police stations' holding cells appears to have been well planned.

In both cases, the prisoners cut through the burglar bars and escaped through the roof.

Nine inmates escaped from the Dennilton police station. The escape occurred at about 1am - two hours after the police had visited the cells.

Superintendent Malcolm Mokomene, of Highveld area police at KwaMhlanga, said another prisoner who witnessed the incident at Dennilton police station, said the escapees cut through the burglar bars.

The prisoners were identified as Abram Maseko, arrested for burglary; Ronny Moses Ngcobo for rape and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm; Innocent Moima for fraud; Silas Mthethwa for murder; Lucky Nhlanhla Radebe for armed robbery; Aubrey Sefako for contravening a protection order; and Kato Khosa, Antony Manyisa and Kurahoni Khabula.

The eight who escaped from KwaMhlanga holding cells were identified as Lucas Mashigo, 27, arrested for murder; Clive Mabena, 30, for illegal possession of explosives; Aaron Mabena, 25, for housebreaking; David Mtsweni, 23, for robbery; Simon Masombuka, 26, for rape; Philemon Mathebula, 22, for housebreaking, theft, escape and robbery; and Vusi Nhlapho, 27, for rape.

The seventh has not been identified. Anyone with information call 08600-10111.
