Patrons who get too drunk in Mpumalanga taverns will not be allowed to buy more liquor and tavern owners will have to drive them home.

This is the agreement between police and tavern owners made at a meeting this week.

Tonga police spokesman Constable Mzwandile Nyambi said the agreement was an attempt to curb attacks on drunks by criminals who followed them from the taverns and on their way home.

"People are advised not to take a lot of money with them when they go drinking because that might attract criminals," said Nyambi

Tavern owners in the Nkomazi area have agreed to close at midnight during the festive season. Teenagers will not be allowed in taverns and public drinking is prohibited.

Nyambi said the police hoped the measures would reduce crime during the holidays.
