Johannesburg mayor Amos Masondo yesterday received a R2 million donation from Norway and Denmark to boost the Greening Soweto Legacy's tree-planting project.

Norwegian ambassador Ove Thorsheim and his Danish counterpart Torben Brylle handed the cheque to Masondo in Braamfontein.

The World Conservation Union (WCU) had approached these countries to help fund the planting of trees in Soweto in preparation for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

Already this year, 6000 trees were planted on Arbour Day along the main arteries leading into Soweto. In the past three months alone, 3000 trees were planted.

"Our aim is to plant as many trees as we can, capitalising on the momentum of the 2010 Fifa World Cup in order to ensure that the community benefits," said Jenny Moodley, marketing and media manager for Joburg City Parks.

Moodley also emphasised the importance of the support of the public sector and encouraged communities to take ownership of trees by respecting and valuing them.

The event was attended by members of the mayoral committee and WCU head James Murombedzi.
