Biofuels to create farm jobs

South Africa wants biofuels to contribute up to 75 percent of renewable energy by 2013, under a R6billion programme, a state spokesman said yesterday.

South Africa wants biofuels to contribute up to 75 percent of renewable energy by 2013, under a R6billion programme, a state spokesman said yesterday.

The strategy, which would not require "excessive support" nor hit food security, comes as volatile oil prices, combined with a global drive to limit greenhouse gases, forces governments to seek other energy sources.

South Africa envisages that biofuels would create jobs, particularly in the agriculture sector.

"The biofuels industry has the potential to create 55 000 agricultural jobs and will contribute to reducing greenhouse gases," said government spokesman Themba Maseko. - Reuters
