ANC should halt all events in KZN until folk behave

The most unruly behaviour by a section of the crowd during Moses Mabhida's burial in Pietermaritzburg last weekend requires more than just verbal condemnation, however strong.

The most unruly behaviour by a section of the crowd during Moses Mabhida's burial in Pietermaritzburg last weekend requires more than just verbal condemnation, however strong.

It is particularly bad because it happened just three months after similar behaviour in Durban when the president hosted the Indian prime minister.

It appears that KwaZulu-Natal has a systematic and deliberate campaign to undermine and disrespect government events and leaders.

Not so long ago, Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo- Ngcuka was heckled in Newcastle and the same was done to Premier Sbu Ndebele at the Youth Day event.

If people feel at liberty to disrupt government events and undermine and humiliate the country's leadership with impunity, then something must be done.

Maybe it is time the government suspends all public campaigns in the province until the leaders and people learn to respect and value others.

As a society we should not tolerate open sabotage of government programmes. We should also not encourage fun to be poked at our elected representatives nor allow them to be humiliated.

KwaZulu-Natal, with all its resources, human and capital, should prove its worthiness and readiness to host events of any magnitude.
