The newly appointed Students Representative Council (SRC) at the University of Zululand is set to work closely with the management to revive the tarnished image of the institution.

The university has been in the spotlight in recent months following disagreements between students and management which saw students going on the rampage and causing damage of more than R1million to university property.

At a special meeting convened yesterday, the parties to the dispute resolved to unify students and management. It was also agreed that any increase in student fees for next year would be in line with the inflation rate.

Xolani Zuma, the newly elected SRC president, told Sowetan that students had been characterised as "loose cannons who go on unnecessary strikes".

But Zuma said: "We are committed to unifying students and management so that everyone gets access to quality education.

"We're committed to doing away with sticks and stones that vandalise our institution."

Sisho Maphisa, the university registrar, said management had engaged in talks with students to improve service delivery, but that students who wanted to destroy the university when they went on strike would not be tolerated.

"Our doors are opened for discussion," Maphisa said.

"We also informed students that any increase in fees will be based on the consumer price index."
