I had to kill armed robber, says driver of beer truck

A delivery-truck driver said he had to kill a man who tried to rob him at the weekend.

The 38-year-old driver and his assistant were delivering sorghum beer in Pienaar, near Nelspruit in Mpumalanga, when the shooting took place.

Police spokesman Mtsholi Bhembe said that when the driver returned to his truck from the shop he found his assistant fighting off a robber.

"When he intervened, the robber pulled out a knife and demanded money from the driver," said Bhembe.

"The driver said he fired twice in the air, trying to scare the robber, but his assailant, armed with a knife, continued to attack.

"The driver then shot him in the face and he died at the scene."

Police investigating the death said the driver had not been arrested but was likely to appear in court shortly.

lA 30-year-old man from KaBokweni was shot dead by an unknown assailant on Sunday.

Zaku Simelane was with his girlfriend at home when a man appeared and opened fire on them.

Simelane died at the scene and his injured girlfriend was admitted to Themba Hospital.

l A KaBokweni resident, Thabo Mbazo, 29, was killed after a fight in a tavern at the weekend.

After an argument with two customers, Mbazo attempted to escape but his assailants gave chase.

Moments later a shot was heard and Mbazo's body was found near the tavern. He had been shot in the head.
