Though the entry-level model in the Mercedes range, the C180 Kompressor is equipped with the latest technologically advanced equipment and a super-luxurious cabin.

At the heart of the vehicle is a turbo-charged 1800cc, 4-cylinder engine. With 105kW of power available from 5300rpm and a flat torque peak of 220Nm from a relatively low 3 500rpm, the car can reach a top speed of almost 220kmh and complete the 0-100kmh dash in just over 10 seconds. This compares well to the performance of most competitors in the C180's class, though the vehicle did display more engine noise than some of its German rivals.

The vehicle is effortless to drive in and around town, aided by the responsive engine and the smooth changes of the 5-speed automatic gearbox. For enthusiastic driving the "Tipshift" manual system can be utilised.

After 35000km of mileage the vehicle still felt as good as new and we couldn't notice any mechanical gremlins.

The C180 is as agile as it is comfortable and boasts sports handling, very similar to the more expensive models in the range, while the electronic stability programme ensures maximum handling safety and helps the driver cope with emergency situations. The electronically controlled ABS braking system ensures safe and efficient braking. But as one would have expected from this German make, the C-Class provides a supremely comfortable ride.

The body structure of the new C-Class has larger deformation zones at the front end. In an impact, this allows the energy to be absorbed even more effectively so that the passenger cell remains largely undamaged in a severe collision. Further safety equipment on our model included front, side and curtain airbags. As a result, this car meets the standards of the world's most rigorous safety tests.

The interior is quiet, well-built and very comfortable. Controls are well laid out and luxury features include plush leather trim and wooden detailing, CD player, multi-functional steering wheel, climate control air-conditioning, cruise control, auto headlights on and electric windows.

It was no surprise that a high quality vehicle such as this would appear like new after clocking up 35000km. Mercedes-Benz quality will also ensure that the vehicle should age very slowly.

This C180 had it all: comfort, refinement, space and quality. By today's standards R234900 is not a lot of money for such a quality vehicle, especially if you look at what the vehicle has to offer. As a used-car purchase, this also represents a substantial saving compared to buying a new vehicle, ensuring great value for money.
