Sabelo Mncwabe, who was poleaxed by Lucky Lewele in the first round of their clash on Friday night, is back on his feet after spending a night at Olivedale Clinic in Randburg.
Mncwabe, who comes from KwaZulu-Natal, was kept at the clinic overnight for observation after Lewele felled him in four seconds at Orlando Communal Hall in Soweto.
Lewele was registering the first defence of his South African welterweight title with the knockout, his 23rd in only three defeats. In the process he recorded the second-quickest stoppage in the history of local professional boxing.
Peter "Terror" Mathebula set the record on October 10, 1977 against Reuben Matewu when he connected with a right hook. Matewu's seconder had not even touched the ground when he heard stunned fight fans at Mdantsane Stadium shout "Yoh!" Their fight, which was scheduled for eight rounds, was over.
Lewele delivered a two-punch combination, the right blow landing flush on Mncwabe's jaw, and so devastating that Mncwabe was counted out while still lying flat on his back. This was Mncwabe's third loss in eight victories.
Meanwhile, Lewele's stablemate, South African flyweight champion Moruti Mthalane, pulverised Zamumzi Xola in three rounds.
Earlier Pius Dipheko pummelled Moses Mbowane into submission over five rounds in the welterweight division while Malawian Isaac Chilembe laboured unnecessarily for five rounds against Emmanuel Gwala in the light heavyweight class.
The bouts were part of promoter Kenosi Mlabateki's maiden tournament.
l In New Zealand on Friday night Osborne Machimane did not come out for the 10th round against Shane Cameron in his challenge for the WBA Pan African and the IBF Pan Pacific heavyweight titles.
l In the US on Saturday Takalani Ndlovu retained his IBO junior featherweight belt in a split decision over Ricardo Castillo.
Two judges scored it 116-112 in Ndlovu's favour while the third scored it 115-113 for Castillo. Ndlovu is now in line to challenge IBF champion Steve Molitor.
