Mike Ntombela, chairman of Senaoane Gunners, has described the R590000 sponsorship from Montic as the best ever Christmas present for the club.

The two parties signed a five- year contract in Heidelberg on Sunday, an event that also marked the 60th birthday of the company's chairman, Karl Kebert.

The event was attended by residents of Montic Park, an informal settlement near the giant diary product company.

Ntombela, who is also the technical adviser of Amavarara, said a large chunk of the money will go to development.

"We are delighted that a Good Samaritan in the form of Karl and his family have come to our rescue," he said. "It has been frustrating running the club without financial support.

"We have seven divisions, including the seniors who campaign in the SAB Regional League. We will also use the rest of the money for transport and paying for the referees.

"Our under-17s recently won the Southern Gauteng under-17 league where they competed against the likes of Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Jomo Cosmos.

"We also take the boys for scientific tests on a regular basis, but we are going to need the support of parents and guardians in this regard."

Amavarara are second on the Vodacom League log after a 2-1 win over Mighty Tigers in Ivory Park last Sunday. Silver Stars are on top of the log.

Kebert, who played football in Australia 38 years ago, said: "I was part of the directors of Fruitree when we sponsored Orlando Pirates. I opted not to buy a semi-professional club.

"We are going to assist Soweto Gunners all the way. Our plan is to see them in the Mvela Golden League in four to five years' time."

Some of the big names who are products of Gunners are Clifford Ngobeni, Thulani Serero (Ajax Cape Town), Vusi Dlamini (Lamontville Golden Arrows), Nhlanhla Mahlangu (Dynamos) and Edward Tshabalala (PJ Stars).

Thulani Hlatshwayo is doing duty for Amajita.
