Azapo's youth wing, the Azanian Youth Organisation, now has a new name.

It was decided at its yearly congress in Bloemfontein at the weekend that Azanyo will now be known as the Azapo Youth Organisation (AYO).

The congress also resolved to stop all further debate about the name change.

Mandla Hanise, who was re-elected president of the youth body, said that political education would be required so that members could understand the rationale behind the new name and the new strategy of the organisation.

He said the congress resolved that the organisation should actively interact with the country's other youth structures and that it be visible.

Azapo's senior leaders, Stanley Sogotyana and Strike Thokoane, encouraged the young delegates to change the name of the youth body because of the mother body's entry into parliament.

They said that branding has became key to winning votes.

Thokoane said that changing the name of the organisation would be good for Azapo's youth because anything to do with the name Azania, was always associated with the Black Consciousness Movement, the PAC and the New Unity Movement.

Saths Cooper, former Azapo president and leading academic, delivered a paper titled: Each generation must out of its obscurity define its mission to fulfil or betray it.

Azapo president and minister of science and technology, Mosibudi Mangena, told the youth that they must come up with new and radical ideas. He also urged them to get involved in community projects in their respective communities.
