The yearly South African Student Sport Union (Sassu) tennis tournament at the University of Johannesburg has attracted a record 39 teams from 20 tertiary institutions.

The tournament started yesterday and the final games will be played on Friday.

"Most of the institutions have sent both men's and women's teams. Based on what has taken place in past years, we expect a very high standard of tennis," said Sampat Coetzee, director of the sports bureau for the hosts.

"The best teams are the University of North West, University of Pretoria, Free State and Stellenbosch. They are the teams to watch, but we can only tell by midweek whether we might have an upset."

The tournament is held at five different venues: UJ courts, Fairlands tennis courts, Parktown Girls High, University of the Witwatersrand and Ellis Park.
