Xenophobia makes one ashamed to be South African.

Xenophobia makes one ashamed to be South African.

Every time one hears on TV or radio of stories of xenophobic attacks it is natural to conclude that the recipient of such disgraceful treatment is a person from Africa - at the hands of a black South African.

Scenes televised on SABC's Special Assignment last week revealed the horrendous treatment suffered by Somalians, many who have fled to this country. This behaviour unwittingly perpetuates the hatred that some South Africans have of themselves as Africans.

This xenophobia is a serous weakness that one needs to be outgrow.
