Weekend drunk is killing us

My husband is a drunk and a violent bully. I have been married to him for more than a decade and have lost count of the number of times he has hit, kicked and punched me.

My husband is a drunk and a violent bully. I have been married to him for more than a decade and have lost count of the number of times he has hit, kicked and punched me.

The only reason I stay is because I am financially dependent on him.

We have four children. He provides a roof over our heads and food in our bellies, and he pays for schooling and clothing. The rest is spent on feeding his craving for alcohol.

He doesn't drink during the week, but from Friday to Sunday our lives are a nightmare. He only drinks at home and never goes out with friends. The kids are terrified of him.

Two years ago I started a small business. As soon as I have enough put aside to start my own life with my kids, I am leaving him.

Strong Woman, Soweto

Many women stay in abusive relationships for exactly the reasons you give. But you must get out now. Your children are terrified of their father. Imagine the damage being inflicted on them. The effects of this violence will stay with them all their lives. You must lay a criminal charge against him and get a restraining order at your nearest police station, then contact People Opposing Women Abuse. They will give you good advice.
