Some East London police officers are using police vehicles to visit their girlfriends in the townships and rural areas instead of fighting crime.

These were the startling revelations made by Vukile Matebe, a South African National Civic Association health and welfare officer.

Matebe, who lives at Needs Camp, said: "You will see a police van coming to our area empty and when the officer goes he will be driving with his girlfriend alongside him."

Mtati Tana, the East London police spokesman, disputes Matebe's claim.

Tana said the police work closely with the community. He said that between 90 percent and 99percent of the residents are satisfied with the work of the SAPS. He insists the police are committed to fighting crime.

"There have been no complaints. We also do crime awareness campaigns in that vicinity," said Tana.
