Christmas comes early for elderly

The atmosphere was relaxed and the mood electrifying when the Limpopo MEC for ocal government and housing, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, awarded houses to residents last week.

A total of 20 residents of Lulekani and Namakgale received title deeds on Thursday for the houses they have lived in for more than 30 years.

Most of the beneficiaries were older than 65.

Speaking during the ceremony, Nkoana-Mashabane said only 20 of the 545 residents had received title deeds for their houses.

She said the awarding of other title deeds for the other houses could be expected in the next financial year.

Mashabane said they expected to award 4600 title deeds to residents in the five districts of the province.

"These deeds mean that the owners of the houses would be scrapped off the credit list of the houses. The owners can now walk free and tall," she said.

Angelinah Matlala, a 65-year- old pensioner, could not hide her jubilation when she received the title deed for her house.

"My family was living in poverty because of the protracted credit for the house.

"Thanks to the Department of Local Government and Housing, this is like Christmas in November to me," she said with tears of joy rolling down her cheeks.
