A 37-year-old policeman from Umlazi, south of Durban, killed his wife before turning the gun on himself in front of the couple's three young children.
The shooting, which has rocked the community, happened on Friday afternoon when Inspector Sakhile Nzama shot his wife Nompumelelo, 34, in front of their children, Musa, 10, Andile, 8, and one-year-old Siphosethu.
Nzama, stationed at the Sphingo police station, worked in the crime prevention unit.
Nompumelelo was shot six times and she died at the scene.
According to Ntombikayise Maphumulo, 57, a domestic worker who was at home at the time of the shooting, the couple had argued over Nompumelelo attending an office party.
She said Nompumelelo had asked to go to the party because she was a guest of honour, but her husband refused.
"She asked him why she could not go and he said that he did not like her attending functions at night.
"She went anyway, hoping to return home before he came back from work. But she came back late and he was furious," said Maphumulo.
The two had apparently argued regularly and the situation had been so tense that Nompumelelo opened a domestic violence case against her husband, who had his gun confiscated by police because he was thought of as a violent person.
Umlazi police spokesman Captain Vincent Mdunge said that the children were treated for shock after the incident.
"We have established that before the incident, the two had argued about Nzama bringing in a child from out of wedlock, while his wife brought home her sister's child, but Nzama was not happy about it," said Mdunge.
The couple's distraught children will now stay with a family relative.
