The use of impounded vehicles by police points to the fact that the law can be an ass.

The use of impounded vehicles by police points to the fact that the law can be an ass.

Senior Superintendent Vishnu Naidoo has exonerated National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi of any wrongdoing, after reports he was seen driving around in a confiscated vehicle. He quotes the police Regulation 80(6), which allows cops to use confiscated vehicles. Naidoo should not be blamed for this ordinance.

What boggles the mind, however, is his explanation that after the disposal process, these vehicles - some of which were seized after murders and armed robberies - can be used by the police to combat crime.

Naidoo now needs to explain what happens to the money confiscated under similar circumstances.
