More than 400 staff members at the Turfloop campus of the University of Limpopo didn't get their salaries last week.
Academic and administration staff were told by campus director Peter Franks last week that the university didn't have enough money to pay their salaries.
Payments should have been made on Friday but by yesterday staff had still not received their salaries. The university's management said it was attending to the problem and apologised for the inconvenience.
A source on campus told Sowetan that staff morale was low and that work was going slowly as a result.
Sowetan has been reliably informed that the institution is experiencing a cashflow problem. But there has been communication between the ministry of education and the university's management to "try to harmonise the payment system".
The University of Limpopo was created from the merger of the Medical University of South Africa (Medunsa) and Turfloop University.
Staff who were previously Medunsa employees have not been affected by the problem and were paid on November 15.
The source said that Turfloop had been facing an overdraft crisis which resulted in its funds being swallowed by its bank every time there was a deposit into its account. A recent transfer of R13million from Medunsa into the University of Limpopo account was credited not to the university but to the overdraft account.
University spokesman Kga- lema Mohuba yesterday confirmed that Turfloop staff had not been paid because of "a technical problem beyond our control".
