The Christian Church of Zion has suspended the priest alleged to have secretly taken an indecent video of a young woman at a weddingreception.

The suspension came after a closed-door church council meeting in Marapyane, Mpumalanga, on Sunday.

Moruti Tshepo Mabaso, 49, was accused of using a video camera to film a female wedding guest after being seen "fiddling for something" under a table.

When Sowetan went to the church on Sunday, Mabaso was said to be in a meeting.

Yesterday the church secretary, Alpheus Moeketsane, confirmed that Mabaso had been suspended, pending a court case.

"I can confirm that Mabaso has been relieved of all his church duties until this matter is over," said Moeketsane.

"If any punishment is taken against him by the church, you will be the first to know," Moeketsane said.

Mabaso, a married father of two, was arrested last week on a charge of indecent assault.

Mabaso and the young woman were reportedly sitting at the same table during the wedding reception of a church member when the incident allegedly took place.

He later appeared before the Marapyane periodic court and was released on a warning, pending his appearance next week.

Mabaso could not be reached for comment about his suspension.
