Limpopo police are investigating claims that the speaker of the provincial legislature, Tshenuwani Farisani, has received death threats.
Police said yesterday they were following several leads about who was responsible for vandalising Farisani's house in Polokwane and threatening him in the past few days.
Kenny Mathivha, Farisani's spokesman, said yesterday the speaker had in the past 30 days received threats to himself and his family.
"On Sunday a note was thrown in front of his residence. It read: 'Shut up'. On Monday, a brick-like object was thrown onto the roof of his residence.
"The incidents were just some of many. A month ago the walls of his residence w ere painted with orange paint. Two houses to the left and one to the right of his residence also had their walls splashed with paint," Mathivha said.
Mathivha said Farisani had also on a few occasions been accosted by unknown and strange vehicles while driving.
Limpopo police spokesman Senior Superintendent Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed yesterday that police were investigating the claims.
"We received the complaint from the speaker's office. We are conducting investigations," Mojapelo said.
Farisani was appointed legislature speaker in 2004. He is the former MEC of the Department of Transport and Public Roads. He was a national MP from 1994 after returning from exile in 1990.
