This should not be tolerated in a country still plagued by a lack of proper housing for the poor, massive unemployment and an acute shortage of schools, among other things.

Public representatives are elected to serve the people who voted the ruling party into power. They should not abuse their powers to venture into businesses aimed at empowering the poor.

Reports that there are senior government officials who have shares in the multi- billion rand Gautrain project smack of self-enrichment.

Public representatives who have no interest in those who voted them into power must do the honourable thing - resign.
