Tony Leon deserves praise for showing statesmanship in stepping down as DA leader next year.

He said though the party wanted him to lead until the 2009 elections, it was his personal decision to leave.

He believes that after 13 years, a change of leadership is good for the DA, South Africa and for himself. He deserves more time with his family, friends and three beloved daschunds.

But he will continue to give his successor support to build a public profile two years before the next election.

The Houghton-Alexandra constituency congratulates Leon. He brought the DA from 250000 voters in 1994, to nearly 2000 000 in 2004.

He kept the spirit of the constitution, the importance of the rule of law, freedom of speech and necessity for a strong and vocal opposition. But his role in promoting democracy has not been given due credit.

He will be remembered for his integrity, enthusiasm, intellect, articulate speeches and quick wit as well as his devotion to duty and personal sacrifices.

The media rarely portrayed his softer side and real interest in people, especially his friends. We wish him a long life, happiness and good health.
