Police have warned businesses and private individuals to take precautions when handling large amounts of money during the festive season because armed robberies are expected to increase.

This comes after five men got away with more that R300000 during a robbery at a Standard Bank branch in Mtubatuba last week.

The robbery happened while the bank manager and her assistant were loading money into an ATM outside the bank.

The manager said she heard a knock on the door of the ATM room, and when her assistant opened the door a man pointed a gun at her.

Four other men grabbed the cash boxes and fled the scene with the money.

"About five of them loaded the boxes into their getaway white Ford Bantam bakkie with no registration plates," she said.

No shots were fired and no one was injured in the incident. - Sne Masuku
