An automatic teller machine (ATM) was damaged in a failed attempt to rob it at the weekend, North West police said yesterday.

Inspector Erica Roos said police were alerted after an explosion at the Standard Bank ATM in a shopping complex in Zone 1 in GaRankuwa at 3am on Saturday.

"The explosion took place at the back of the ATM, where the safe door is.

"The criminals tried to blow it open but part of the explosive device failed to detonate," said Roos.

She said the ATM didn't appear to be damaged but bank officials found evidence of the explosion when they opened it. No money was taken. - Sapa
