Day the music died

An Mpumalanga community took the law into their own hands at the weekend and bulldozed a tavern situated next to a school because the owner refused to turn down the music.

Boozers in the village of Nokaneng, outside Mmametlhake, were shocked when their favourite hangout was turned into a pile of rubble after endless complaints about loud music were ignored.

The community said they had warned the owner, Thomas Lefifi, to turn down the music because the pupils at Thufane High School were writing exams, but he refused to listen. The villagers said they had become increasingly worried as final exams approached.

When Sowetan contacted him, Lefifi was unable to estimate the cost of the damage to his business. - Alfred Moselakgomo
