Five men have been arrested in connection with the killing of a tavern patron earlier this month, a KwaZulu-Natal Midlands police officer said.

Superintendent Joshua Gwala said yesterday that the five men, aged between 23 and 29, were arrested during a police operation that started on Thursday.

Bheki Sibiya, 31, and his companion Xolani Buthelezi, 32, were drinking at a tavern in Sobantu Village near Pietermaritzburg on November 19 when shots were fired at them by the occupants of a green VW Polo, which then drove off.

Sibiya was declared dead at the scene. Buthelezi was admitted to a Pietermaritzburg Hospital in a stable condition.

Gwala said police recovered three 9mm pistols believed to have been used in the attack.

He said the five men were expected to appear in court today. - Sapa
