Controversial ANC chief whip Mbulelo Goniwe said yesterday he would support any ANC member who took over as secretary of the party in Eastern Cape.

Goniwe said he had asked the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) to withdraw its nomination of him for the position so that he could clear his name "from this whole controversy".

He was referring to the sexual harassment allegations that have been levelled against him

"I'm grateful that they [the ANCYL] accepted my request. I will not avail myself for any position until I sort out this matter," he said.

Goniwe said he would write to the provincial secretary to formally withdraw from the race.

lThe ANCYL intends to nominate Siphatho Handi, secretary of the ANC's Buffalo City sub-region, as provincial secretary at the party's provincial conference in Alice this week. Handi is Buffalo City Municipality's chief of staff.
