A 49-year-old Mpumalanga sangoma was sentenced yesterday at the Nelspruit circuit of the Pretoria high court to 10 years' imprisonment for raping a nine-year-old girl.

Elvis Ngomane, from White River, was approached by the girl's father, who wanted a cure for his daughter's stomach pains. He told the girl's father that, for his medicine to be more effective, she should "sleep over".

After her father left, Ngomane raped the child and then chased her away. She was found by a passerby who took her to the police.

When sentencing him, Judge Nico Coetzee said: "You are an embarrassment to traditional healers who work honestly to heal people." - Alfred Moselakgomo
