Boxing promoter Kenosi Mlabateki is dedicating her first professional tournament at Orlando Communal Hall on Friday to the "16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children" campaign.

The former chief executive of the now defunct Gauteng Provincial Boxing Control Commission, who operates under the banner of Rams Boxing Promotions, has called the double-header "Tribute to Women".

Lucky Lewele will defend his South African welterweight title against Sabelo Mncwabe and Moruti Mthalane will defend his flyweight title against Zamumzi Xola. The champions are stablemates at Nick Durandt's gym.

Mlabateki claimed she almost lost this television date after being treated shabbily by "some men" who allocate TV dates. But she is undeterred and determined to honour women for their strength, tenacity and resilience in their daily challenges.

"I struggled a lot as the CEO and even after the offices were closed down in April 2004, things did not go well for me simply because I am a woman.

"Up until now I have not been paid my money that was awarded by the CCMA [Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration] in May last year," she said.

"This heightens the way issues pertaining to women are handled in many organisations here."

The tournament was only confirmed a few days ago.
