Traffic came to a standstill on the R552 near Fourways yesterday morning because of a car accident which left one person dead and 16 others injured.

The accident occurred on Cedar Road at about 6.30am. Four vehicles - a BMW, a taxi and two trucks - were involved.

Malcolm Midgley of Johannesburg emergency services said the driver of a BMW lost control of his car and hit the rear of the taxi.

"After hitting the taxi, the BMW collided with one of the two trucks which were travelling in the opposite direction, causing them to collide," said Midgley.

When Sowetan arrived at the scene, the BMW was lodged under one of the trucks, with the body of a dead woman trapped inside.

"The driver of the BMW is in a critical condition in hospital," Midgley said.

A witness, Peter Kgaluse, said: "The driver of the truck failed to stop after he was hit by the BMW. He went on driving for a long distance until the BMW was completely under the truck."
