Sowetan and Anglo American will continue to sponsor the Young Communicators Awards, a popular public speaking competition for high school pupils.

Previous winners are Bonginkosi Dlamini, affectionately known as Zola, and Asanda Magaqa, a radio news reporter, who won this year's Journalist of the Year Award.

Prizes for the overall winners, like Magaqa and Zola, include bursaries for university.

Most of our previous winners decided to choose careers that kept them out of the limelight.

Seventeen-year-old Asanda Shabangu from Lilyfontein College in Eastern Cape is this year's overall winner.

She was given R30000 towards her higher education studies. A thrilled Shabangu said that she wants to pursue a career in broadcast journalism.

Shabangu's runners-up, Eduan van der Westhuizen, 18, from Louis Trichardt High School in Limpopo and Feziwe Nthali, 15, from Sibusisiwe High School in Mpumalanga, walked away with R20 000 and R15 000 respectively.

The three overall winners' schools also benefited. The schools were given R10000, R7000 and R5000 respectively.

These awards seek to help pupils in grades 11 and 12 to improve their oral English communication skills and to nurture young people with leadership potential, to introduce them to the concept of nation-building and to prepare them for the professional working environment.

l In Johannesburg at the weekend, the young communicators awards' provincial coordinators attended a workshop to help Sowetan and Anglo American to improve the competition.

Those who attended were Peggy Manganye from Gauteng, Leonard Davids from the Western Cape, Thandiwe Dlekedla from Northern Cape, Nomonde Gazi from the Eastern Cape, Moses Nkosi from Mpumalanga, Job Matsaneng from Free State, Mary Ndlovu from Limpopo and Ntokozo Maphisa from KwaZulu-Natal.

Itumeleng Kgosiemang from North West could not make it and she will be updated by the awards' publicists Frog Communications and Makwetla and Associates.
