To walk in the shadow of trigger-happy heist gangs every day is not anyone's idea of earning a livelihood.

Spare a thought for cash- in-transit guards who face this grim reality daily.

Their daily work is underscored by an eerie experience akin to someone being caught between a rock and a hard place. That is if the ordeal described by certain Coin security guards in a Sowetan report this week is an industry-wide phenomenon. The guards told of a hit squad allegedly hired by management. The squad allegedly tortures them to extract confessions after they are targets of heists. Coin has refused to comment.

If true, the allegations must be probed by police as a matter of urgency.
