A security guard and his co-accused made an appearance in the Nongoma magistrates' court yesterday and were remanded in custody until their next appearance on Wednesday.

Salakutshelwa Mbatha, 44, and Tholumuzi Ntshangase, 45, were arrested on Monday, the day after allegedly trying to rob the OL Family Store in Nongoma, northern KwaZulu- Natal, where Mbatha was employed.

Captain Vusi Mbatha of the Ulundi police said three men had tried to rob the store. When the men entered the store they allegedly ordered the security guards on duty to hand over their guns. One guard resisted and was shot dead, while another retaliated, killing one of the attackers.

"This raised questions as to why one of the guards was not injured and when investigations were conducted it became clear that it was an inside job," Mbatha said.

He said the suspects had received information from one of the guards.
