British hostage dies in Nigerian troop shootout

ABUJA - A British hostage in Nigeria's oil-producing south died in a shootout between kidnappers and troops.

ABUJA - A British hostage in Nigeria's oil-producing south died in a shootout between kidnappers and troops.

The Briton was abducted from an offshore facility with six other foreigners early on Wednesday.

He was killed later in the day when the kidnappers, with the hostages in their boats, ran into a military patrol in the remote creeks of the Niger Delta.

Two hostages were wounded, one seriously, in the firefight and the remaining four were released unharmed. They all worked for the Italian oil giant Eni.

Abductions of oil workers are frequent in the lawless delta.

The only other known hostage death was in August, during a botched attempt by troops to free a Nigerian employee of Royal Dutch Shell. - Reuters
