Police are investigating a case of arson after a Durban school was set alight in what they believe might have been an attempt to have an exam postponed.

Police spokesman Superintendent Danelia Veldhuizen said that when staff arrived at Durban's Star College in Westville yesterday the building had been razed.

The building consisted of two classrooms. The school's principal, Faruk Turkmen, who suspected an "electrical fault", said matric exams were being written in one of the classrooms and internal exams were being written in the other. The building was more than 10 years old. - Sapa
